While a senior in medical school, and among the top in his class at Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Poindexter stumbled across the field of plastic surgery. “I was a very intense student and was aiming toward a career in ophthalmology,” Dr. Poindexter notes. “Because it was the most competitive field at the time, I thought it must be the best. Finally, I actually spent some time on an ophthalmology rotation and hated it.” It was a “fill in” rotation with a local plastic surgeon in Indianapolis that unveiled the area of medicine that became his passion.
